Though the practice of candle-making is not tied to the Halloween holiday per se, candles do come in handy during the holiday. It’s used as part of costumes, house decorations and to set the mood for spooky season activities. Here are just some of the ways we use candles during this Halloween:

To start your candle-making journey, let’s get started with this helpful list of materials you will need:
Once all these materials are put together, we can get started on the process of creating the candles!
First step: Attach wick stickers to the metal tabs on the bottoms of your wicks to make them ready for your candles. You may also apply a little dab of glue on the wick tab using a hot glue gun. Then carefully insert the wick into the bottom of the glass container.
Attach the wick to a wick holder that has been placed over the top of your glass container. You may also tie the wick around a pencil and lay it on top of the container to keep it from falling out. Make sure the wick is standing straight up in the centre of your glass.
Second step: Measure how much wax you'll need to fill each container. Wax flakes will melt down to around half their original size. Thus, anticipate that your containers will need to be filled to the brim twice as much. Use a double boiler technique to melt your wax. This is mostly a safety measure to ensure that the wax does not overheat. Simply fill a medium saucepan or pot halfway with water and heat on medium – high. Fill one of the measuring glasses with wax. As the wax melts, stir it occasionally.
Third step: When the wax reaches a temperature of 185 degrees F, candle color dye and scent can be added. If you don't have a glass thermometer, skip this step and wait until the wax is completely melted. Add the dye to the mix. We recommend dyeing these candles using double the amount of dye recommended on the package because soy candles typically turn out pastel when dyed with the recommended amount.
Add the fragrance oil. Remove the wax from the source of heat. Now you may whisk in your preferred amount of fragrance oil into the heated wax. You may also use essential oils to scent your candle. Combine the oils in the wax and stir well.
Fourth step: Pour the first layer and let dry completely before pouring the next one, and so on.
Fifth step: When you've completed adding all of the layers you want to your candles, trim the wick with scissors to approximately 1/4 inch of wick left above the wax.
Sixth step: Decorate your candle. Your Halloween candle is now ready. To add some extra spookiness to it, paste some ghost and skull stickers on the glass jar, and you are good to go for celebrating Halloween with candles.

Grilled
Though raw with some ice is the most recognisable preparation of oysters, grilling is also a great way to prepare your oysters! In fact, grilling oysters can even be beneficial and safer in warmer climates, when you opt to have some oyster snacks in the warmer summer months. This is because the saltwater bacteria called vibrio becomes concentrated inside oysters during the summer months and is responsible for cases of food poisoning. Though beaches are considered luxury places for vacation, they are an equally important part of our ecosystem. They connect us to the oceans and seas that provide us with many wonderful resources – from food to important minerals. Thus, it is very important to keep our beaches clean.
We may not think about beaches in the context of marine pollution either, but the reality is that a great deal of marine life actually depends on the health of a beach ecosystem. For Clean the Beaches week, which falls on the first week of July, we must understand the impact of trash on our beaches, no matter how small they may appear. Taking the initiative can be our first step in contributing to the health of our oceans!
When going on beach clean up
Living near or around a beachside area has its perks. You can go for a quick dip or even just enjoy a walk on the beach to feel that salty seaside breeze. But just like many places in the world, some of our beaches can be littered with various junk and plastic waste. If you live close by a beach or live somewhere where there is a public beach within walking distance, try beach cleaning activities with your family (or friends!). You can join a planned one or even just head out to the beach and initiate the activity yourself!
For Clean Beaches Week, here are some tips to remember when you do decide to schedule your very own beach clean up drive!

Pick a beach – the first thing to do is, of course, figure out what beaches will need that little clean up TLC. This step is also crucial just in case the beach already has beach clean up activities lined up that you can sign up to or if you will need a small fee to pay to enter the beach.
You may wonder why there are entrance fees on certain beaches, but it’s important to note that all beaches still require maintenance and often offer toilets and showers, which are privately owned. The entrance fees may go to the maintenance of those facilities, which beachgoers will need.
Plan a time – Planning a time for the beach clean up can help you choose a time of the day that wouldn’t be too hard on the skin. You can also do this very easily if you’ve already picked a beach. With that step done, you can identify what times of the day beachgoers will be at the beach and what time they will leave. You can plan to do the clean up after the guests have left or even while they are still at the beach, as a way to serve a good example to the community.

Keep Cool

When the summer heat strikes, the excessive sun exposure and ever-increasing heat index can leave us feeling lethargic. So, before any talk of vacation comes to mind, perhaps we can soothe our summer heat woes with the balm of these tips on staying cool.
Different Types of Summer Skin Problems
Acne breakouts

What it is: Known as one of the most common skin problems in the summer, acne breakouts occur when bacteria and oils clog your pores. This is because our faces produce more oil during hot climates in order to release heat from our body. When this extra oil mixes with bacteria and fills our pores, it leads to acne popping up on our skin and face. [3]
How to treat it: Thyme has been found to be an effective tincture against acne. While rosemary essential oil has been found to be effective in reducing redness and puffiness. Folliculitis
What it is: During the summer, even hair follicles can get irritated. At first, it may look like small pimples typically found around tiny pockets from which hair grows. Then, they grow itchy and irritable. Folliculitis is not only itchy, it can even be embarrassing, especially since this infection can spread and turn into crusted sores. [4]
How to treat it: Folliculitis can be avoided when you limit wearing tight clothing in the summer and instead, opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothes. Cow’s milk

Unsurprisingly, at the top of our list is cow’s milk. Lactose intolerance in an individual happens when the body is unable to make an enzyme called lactase, which aids in the digestion of lactose. Lactose intolerance can start at any age and can also be caused by conditions like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), coeliac disease, and other bowel infections. [1]

Though this allergy occurs in 68% of children, it does eventually go away by the time they’re 16 years or older. The reason for this allergy is the differing proteins between egg whites and egg yolks, with most allergens being found in egg whites. When these incompatible proteins are ingested, it can cause any possible symptoms from a simple upset stomach to even – though rarely – anaphylaxis.
Interestingly, egg allergies can be circumvented, for instance, by heating the eggs, as this can change the shape of the allergy-causing proteins, which means you can prevent your body from seeing these proteins as harmful. [3]
Tree nuts

This allergy from nuts and seeds mainly from trees is a very common food allergy as well, affecting some 3% of people worldwide. Some of the most common tree nut allergens include brazil nuts, cashews, pine nuts, macadamia nuts, among many others. [4]
It’s also an allergy that requires careful attention, for people with a tree nut allergy can also be allergic to food products made with nuts, such as nut butters and oils. In general, people with tree nut allergies are advised to stay away from any nuts altogether, given the fact that tree nut allergies are responsible for 50% of anaphylaxis-related deaths. [5]
Peanut

Different from tree nut allergies in the sense that peanuts themselves are considered legumes, a peanut allergy is said to be genetic. However, though studies found a strong link between genes and the peanut allergy, it is not the full story – some studies suggest environmental and dietary factors also play a role in developing this allergy. [6]
Still, in a similar fashion to egg allergies, it’s found that peanut allergies seem to get resolved in 15-22% of children as they become teenagers. [7] Interestingly, tests are being done to try and provide new treatments for children with peanut allergies, like, for instance, exposing patients to small amounts of peanuts or peanut allergens under strict medical supervision through the process of desensitisation. Allergies take on many forms, but only in shellfish allergies has it been found that even the vapours produced from cooking shellfish can trigger an allergic reaction, [11] which makes this somehow even more dangerous than those with the tree nut or peanut allergy.
Studies have shown that the most common trigger of a seafood allergy is a protein called tropomyosin, which can be found in shrimp, prawns, crayfish, lobsters, squid and scallops. Unlike, an egg allergy though, shellfish allergies are not likely to get resolved over time, so anyone who suffers from this allergy will likely have to exclude all shellfish from their diet for their safety.
